About Nate
Nate Salazar is running to serve as Salt Lake County Councilmember because he believes County government should reflect the community it serves and listen to all residents, especially those who have historically been left out of decision-making.
Salt Lake County and the Wasatch Mountains have always been the backdrop of Nate’s life. As a fourth-generation Salt Laker, his family has called this community home for more than a century. The truth is, Nate was not the kid anyone expected to go into public service. He struggled in school. Yet, now has the honor of serving as President of the Salt Lake City School Board. He has always run for office to give back to the community and schools that gave him a second chance, and running for County Council is the next step in that service.
Nate has built his career at the intersection of policy and real life, where listening is as essential as leadership. As President of the Salt Lake City School Board, he guided long-term strategy, managed public resources responsibly, and led with stability and accountability under intense pressure. Under his leadership, the District strengthened governance, centered students in decision-making, and improved student outcomes. Nate doesn’t just talk about clean air, he delivers it, enacting policies and financing solutions that reduce the District’s carbon footprint by 26 percent, with a clear path to reach 75 percent before the end of the decade.
Nate’s experience also includes managing budgets, teams, and public-facing services with a local public library system, as well as working across political and institutional lines in the Mayor’s Office to resolve constituent concerns and implement policy priorities. Earlier in his career, he worked directly with families, youth, and vulnerable populations in schools and Juvenile Justice Services.
As a County Councilmember, Nate will focus on decisions that improve everyday quality of life. That means prioritizing prevention over crisis, strengthening supports for children, families, and seniors, advancing housing stability, protecting our air, land and canyons, and ensuring County services are accessible and effective. He brings a practical, people-first approach grounded in accountability, collaboration, and results.
